About Hannya Kankei

Hannya Kankei is a regular member of the Kogei Association. Born in Takaoka, he is the fourth generation of the Hannya family foundry, which has been producing high-quality copper works since 1870. He studied metal casting under Living National Treasure Katori Masahiko (1899–1988) and joined the family workshop in 1950. He began exhibiting his work in 1969 at the Kogei (Japanese Traditional Crafts) Exhibition, where he won first prize in 1973 and went on to receive multiple awards thereafter. In 2001 and 2005, at the request of the Imperial Household Agency, he created replicas of ancient bronzes from the Shosoin, the treasure house of Todai-ji Temple in Nara.
